As a boy in Cape Breton, Joe entered choral singing at an early age, first as a church chorister, followed by many years singing with the Cape Breton Youth Choir, Nova Scotia Youth Choir, and National Youth Choir of Canada. He also played French Horn with the Sydney Schools Band throughout his grade school years. After graduating high school, he earned a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree at Dalhousie University, specializing in Vocal Performance, followed by Performance Diplomas in Opera at Bel Canto Institutes in New York, USA and Florence, Italy.

Throughout his university education and beyond, Joe continued choral singing as a cantor and tenor soloist with the choir of St. Mary’s Basilica in Halifax, as well as with choirs such as the Dalhousie Chamber Choir, the Halifax Camerata Singers, Voix Libres and the church choir of St. Andrew & St. Paul in Montreal. Returning to Halifax, he co-founded and co-directed Nova Voce – Nova Scotia’s Provincial Men’s Choir with Terry Hurrell. A proud member of Choral Canada, the Nova Scotia Choral Federation and Alberta Choral Federation, Joe is very pleased to now be working with the Grande Prairie Boys Choir.
